The studying module

The studying module is primarily meant for foreign students who have moved to Estonia in order to study.

The purpose of the module is to provide an overview of the following:

• rights and obligations of foreigners who have moved here by way of learning mobility;
• culture of studies in Estonia;
• traineeship and work opportunities;
• institutions of higher education, student and academic networks and organisations etc., and much more


The training course will cover the most important topics which all foreign students or foreigners in general should be familiar with to adapt more easily to living here in Estonia.

Among others, the following topics will be discussed:

• Residence permit and its renewal
• Estonian education system
• Organisation of higher education and research
• Study culture
• Support services
• Libraries
• Student organisations
• Internship and work opportunities

The purpose of the studying module is to help you adapt to Estonian society by means of acquiring knowledge and provide you with a thorough overview of how to start studies in Estonia, the process of studying and post-graduate opportunities.

As a result of the training, among other things, you will learn how to obtain the documents required for residence, how to communicate with Estonian authorities, teaching staff and co-students in a more efficient way, and, all in all, how to settle in with less effort.

After completing the education module, you will:

  • be familiar with the requirements for the residence permit for the purpose of learning mobility and know where to find additional information if needed;
  • have an overview of Estonian student networks as well as academic networks and organisations;
  • have a general understanding of the Estonian education system;
  • have an overview of the organisation of research, higher education and professional higher education;
  • have an understanding of the Estonian culture of studies;
  • know where to find information regarding internship during your studies and afterwards;
  • know the restrictions and opportunities for working during and after your studies;
  • have an overview of various job portals and employment services offered by the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund (Estonian: ‘Eesti Töötukassa’);
  • have a general understanding of the Estonian library system and know where to find relevant information, and
  • have an overview of other services provided to newly relocated migrants who come here in the context of learning mobility and know where to find the relevant information.

The training day is structured, following the principles of adult learning. The training course will be held in the form lectures of great practical value and solo or group exercises and discussions. The training day will give you with a number of opportunities to practice your newly acquired knowledge on the spot, to ask questions and get answers. The training course pays special attention to support in adjustment and providing you with information.

The training course will last one working day (8 hours) in accordance with the following schedule:

9:00 – 11:30 Introduction. Right of residence and residence permit.
11:30 – 11:45 Break
11:45 – 13:15 Estonian education system and the organisation of higher education and research
13:15 – 14:00 Lunch break
14:00 – 15:30 Culture of studying, student support services, libraries and student organisations
15:30 – 15:45 Break
15:45 – 16:45 Internship and job opportunities, labour market services
16:45 – 17:15 A test to consolidate your knowledge

The day will end with a test which is meant for consolidating knowledge after the training course. The test is a self-evaluation tool:  it is not intended as formal assessment after the completion of the training course.

The participants will be provided with coffee, tea and snacks. There are places where you can have lunch near the training location.
